Steve Kerekes

Communications Director

Steve Kerekes is an accomplished professional with 30 years of communications experience at the national level. From 1997 to early 2017, he directed the media relations department for the Nuclear Energy Institute, where in recent years he also guided integrated content development for NEI’s website and social media properties. Earlier in his career, Mr. Kerekes directed the media relations division at the National Right to Work Committee. He also has served as press secretary and legislative assistant to Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs and Science, Space and Technology committees, and he has led account teams at the Powell Tate and E. Bruce Harrison public affairs firms.

Mr. Kerekes specializes in strategic communications, media relations, message development and management of emerging issues. He regularly has counseled colleagues and member company communicators on priority projects with high-quality results, and he is proud to be considered a “pro’s pro” by many of his peers.

Mr. Kerekes was a leading member of the NEI team recognized for its crisis communication and rapid response strategy after the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident. NEI received the Global SABRE Award for best global association public relations campaign and the Public Relations Society of America’s Silver Anvil for best crisis communication strategy. Mr. Kerekes started his communications career as a government affairs reporter for daily newspapers in Virginia and Georgia, and he won a Virginia Press Association award for investigative reporting.

He and his wife, Karen, and their two children reside in Alexandria, Va.
