Program Overview:
The School of Computing and Information is at the forefront of the cybersecurity field, exploring and developing the technologies, policies, and practices involved in protecting networks, systems, and private information about individuals. Since 2004, our faculty have been studying how to make sure that systems and networks can carry sensitive information safely, how to identify and deter malicious attacks on any type of information systems, and how to protect commerce environments. As the faculty and degree programs are truly multidisciplinary, our work goes beyond hardware and software to consider the human, ethical, and privacy aspects of cybersecurity.
The school has been designated by the US National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education since 2004. Thus, students graduating from either of the Master’s programs (Information Science or Telecommunications) can earn up to FIVE CNSS certifications: CNSS standards 4011, 4012, 4013, 4014, and 4015.
These certifications indicate that the School’s curriculum of specific information security courses has been determined to meet the standards of the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) National Training Standards for Information Systems Security Professionals.
Because of the quality of program, as well as its international reputation, we have been able to offer several scholarships to students interested in a career in security, including the Federal Cyber Service: Scholarship for Service (SFS) and the Information Assurance Scholarship Program, both federally funded.
Faculty scholars and student researchers are at the forefront of unlocking the key to securing data, systems, and every individual’s privacy. Our research groups are exploring how to better protect Grid systems, workflow management systems, social networks, wireless networks, cloud computing environments, and e-commerce platforms. Security research projects have been funded by the National Science Foundation, CISCO, National Institute of Standards, University of Pittsburgh, and DARPA.
The knowledge learned today in our classrooms or gained today in our labs will drive the design and development of secure machines, systems, and networks of the future. More than 1,000 companies sell cybersecurity products to electric utilities in the U.S. and Canada. This project is designed to organize and evaluate these vendors, and their products and services, to make it easier for utility companies to make informed decisions on products that meet their specific cybersecurity needs.

For each topic, we will provide a short overview, a list of the vendors who provide products or solutions that address that topic, and a link to the university or universities evaluating those vendor offerings.
Universities, colleges and research labs are conducting valuable research on vendor product offerings and solutions that address a broad range of cybersecurity issues and challenges. The results of these analyses are published here and will be updated as new information becomes available.
